How to Best Store Your Mattress in Self Storage
Storing a mattress may sound simple, but doing it the right way can make all the difference when it comes time to take it back out. Mattresses are expensive and delicate—improper storage can lead to mold, odors, and sagging. Whether you’re moving, downsizing, or simply rotating out seasonal bedding, here’s how to protect your mattress while it’s in storage.
1. Clean and Dry Your Mattress First
Before you even think about putting it in a storage unit, give your mattress a thorough cleaning.
- Vacuum it: Use the upholstery attachment to remove dust, crumbs, and debris from both sides.
- Spot clean stains: Use a gentle upholstery cleaner or a mix of water and mild detergent. Avoid soaking the material.
- Air it out: Let your mattress dry completely—preferably in a well-ventilated room or outside on a sunny day. Any lingering moisture can lead to mildew once stored.
2. Use a Mattress Bag or Cover
Once your mattress is clean and dry, protect it from dust and moisture.
- Plastic mattress bags (available at most hardware or moving supply stores) are inexpensive and effective.
- Avoid sealing it too tightly. A completely airtight wrap can trap humidity inside—opt for breathable covers if your storage unit isn’t climate-controlled.
3. Choose the Right Storage Unit
Where you store your mattress matters.
- Climate-controlled units are best for mattresses. They maintain a consistent temperature and humidity level, preventing mold, warping, and deterioration.
- Elevate your mattress if you’re using a standard storage unit. Place it on a pallet or flat surface to keep it off the floor and away from potential moisture.
4. Store It Flat, Not Upright
It’s tempting to stand your mattress up to save space—but resist the urge!
Storing a mattress on its side can cause the inner coils or foam layers to shift, permanently warping its shape. Instead:
- Lay the mattress flat on a clean surface or on top of other items that won’t compress it.
- Avoid placing heavy boxes or furniture on top—it can leave dents or uneven impressions.
5. Air It Out Before Using Again
When you’re ready to take your mattress out of storage:
- Remove the cover and allow it to air out for 24 hours.
- Check for any signs of odor, moisture, or pests before setting it back on your bed frame.
- If it has a musty smell, sprinkle baking soda on both sides, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum it off.
Bonus Tip: Label and Track Your Mattress
If you’re storing multiple mattresses (for guests, kids, or vacation homes), label each one clearly. Include the size (queen, twin, etc.) and which room it belongs to. It’s a small step that saves you from confusion later.
